Drinking Water
-
Lime-scale and Iron are the most common concerns when it comes to drinking water. Did you know that most people are perfectly safe drinking the minerals in the water and really is not a concern for drinking water? For those that do not want it then it can be removed with a Reverse Osmosis system or a specific filtration system. Keep in mind you will need additional protection to protect your equipment. This can be done with a water conditioner, a water softener or a resin filter. Contact us for more details on these options.

Bacteria (e-coli) have been a growing concern over the years. Not all E-coli will kill you but why take the chance? There is the common method of a UV light which has been somewhat effective over the years but beware of scale building up on the lens and the expense of replacing the bulbs every year. Another method (which is used in most municipalities) is to add chlorine to the water. Unfortunately most people don't like the taste of chlorine and too much can be harmful so then you can add a filter that will remove the chlorine. There are alternative chemicals to Chlorine that have been used over the last several years that are less harmful than Chlorine. Another option which is not talked about very much is the Flow Tech Home. It is sold to kill bacteria in saunas and commercial applications but I have personally seen good results in drinking water applications and it is the least expensive to operate. It is not "certified" or talked about for treating bacteria in drinking water but as I have already mentioned I have seen positive results in this application.
*NO MATTER WHICH METHOD YOU DECIDE TO USE I RECOMMEND THAT YOU HAVE YOUR WATER TESTED REGULARLY TO INSURE ALL EQUIPMENT IS FUNCTIONING CORRECTLY.
Your health is not worth risking!

Discolored Water
Discolored water is a concern which can be caused from a few different issues.
-
The most recognized is iron in the water; this can be solved by installing an iron filter. Please note there are 3 different types of iron filters that can be used! The most common is the large filter that looks like a softener that back washes and regenerates itself. Although this is the most expensive method it is the least amount of work to maintain. A second method is a Big Blue filter with iron filter cartridges. Less expensive but requires the filter to be monitored and filters are costly. A third option is to use 2 sediment filters in series using the catalyst method. (Contact Hard Water Rescue for more details) This method is the cheapest of all three methods and the filters are cheap but you will need to monitor and replace filters when needed.

The other main cause of discolored water is seepage from your pipes (most noticeable with galvanized pipes) if you have heavy coloring due to pipe seepage this is a strong indication your pipes are wearing out. Typically this means you are about to or are already experiencing pin hole leaks throughout your pipes. The most common method is to Rip out and Replace your pipes. This is very costly and creates a large mess with a lot of cosmetic repairs such as dry walling and painting not to mention how time consuming this is. At Hard Water Rescue we recommend coating your pipes with a Pipe lining in commercial applications! It is safe to be used with drinking water, there is little to no mess to clean up due to damage of cutting out drywall, the life expectancy is over 100 years without any leaks.

A Flow Tech Home water conditioner will treat mild iron and will help reduce pipe seepage but will also enhance any filtration system used to protect your entire plumbing system and extend the life of all of your appliances.
Dishes and Dishwashers
There are two main concerns that come up when dealing with dishwashers. Scale build up inside the dishwasher and spotting on dishes. There are a few solutions for these problems.
-
Water softener - this will soften the water removing spotting from dishes and prevent future scale from forming in your dishwasher. (as long as the softener is maintained)
-
Flow Tech Home water conditioner (I specify Flow Tech Home as there are many other water conditioners out there that do not obtain the same results) - this will prevent any further scale build up plus will remove any scale that has already formed. (due to water conditioners do not remove any minerals from the water spotting on dishes can still occur) To prevent spotting on dishes can be prevented with specific dish soaps designed for hard water, you can rinse dishes in cold water instead of hot or you can towel dry dishes.
*Note the Flow Tech Home water conditioner can be used with a water softener giving you the best of both worlds.
Shower Heads and Hot Water Tanks
Although you may not realize the connection between these two items they are both plagued by the same issues; lime-scale! Your shower head holes will plug up reducing the amount of water flowing to you and your hot water tank will scale up on the heat source causing it to have to work harder in order to heat the water. Again there are multiple solutions to resolve this issue.
-
Water softener - this will soften the water preventing any further scale to form in your shower head or in your hot water tank. (In some cases it will remove some of the buildup already formed) The softened water will give you the silky / slimy feeling on your skin. (This is a personal preference if you like it or not) A water softener will decrease the life of your sacrificial anodes, requiring it to be changed out more often or replaced with a power anode.
-
Flow Tech Home water conditioner - this will prevent any future scale from forming anywhere in your plumbing system including back to your well head plus will remove (over time) any scale that has already formed (as long as water can run though it currently)
-
Resin filtration - this method is similar to a water softener but instead of back washing water you change the filter. This is not something I would recommend for doing a complete house but is an option sometimes needed.
*Note the Flow Tech Home water conditioner can be used with both the water softener and the resin filters to improve your results.
All 3 of these methods reduce the amount of soap required for doing dishes, washing clothes and showering.
